Torelli Thu, 07 Jul 2011 12:49:11 -0700 Hi everyone, The recent post about running coot on a powermac G5 has me a little confused because I thought the only option for stereo on a Mac was to use a Zalman monitor for passive stereo.
active (or quad-buffered, sequential, hardware) stereo 3D is possible on a MacPro, at least with a Nvidia Quadro card with a 3-pin Mini-DIN socket, Stereographics/realD or NuVision shutter glasses and emitter, and a suitable CRT monitor. But those are hard to find, nowadays (i.e., used monitors on eBay and alike).I never heard whether this also works with a stereo TFT monitor and Nvidia glasses and emitter. But a colleague of mine next door runs this under Linux. So, I just plugged in the Nvidia emitter to the USB and 3-pin-Mini-DIN sockets on my MacPro, and connected a Samsung 3D stereo-capable monitor. I could set the TFT monitor to 120 Hz, and Chimera switches to sequential stereo, but, unfortunately, the Nvidia emitter does not work together with the Mac (it blinks red instead of a steady green light). Next test was to replace the Nvidia emitter with my Stereographics emitter. This time, I do see something that reminds me of stereo, but with heavy ghosting and blending of different depths through the molecule - so, in short, it's not usable.Coot Software Download Mac
A reader sent me a link to a posting on the brilliant Crystallography on OS X website highlighting the availability of a stand alone version of Coot for Mac OSXCoot Download Mac
With considerable help from Nat Echols, we can now build coot automatically every night a new revision is available. I have two versions, built on two different computers. The 10.6 version should run on 10.6.8 or greater. The 10.9 version is for 10.9 or later.. The package installer will install everything in /Library/Coot. Unfortunately, it breaks if you move it. A wrapper shell script called 'coot' will reside in /usr/local/bin/coot when you are done.
Coot (Crystallographic Object-Oriented Toolkit) is for macromolecular model building, model completion and validation, particularly suitable for protein modelling using X-ray data.
Coot displays maps and models and allows model manipulations such as idealization, real space refinement, manual rotation/translation, rigid-body fitting, ligand search, solvation, mutations, rotamers, Ramachandran plots, skeletonization, non-crystallographic symmetry and more.
